Overlap Zones, Multipath & Why Band-Specific Antennas Matter
Transmitter coverage overlaps in several areas of Perth’s northern suburbs. A property on the boundary of VHF and UHF coverage, for example in parts of Quinns Rocks, Burns Beach or Iluka, may be able to receive both the Bickley VHF signal and the Two Rocks UHF relay simultaneously. In these situations, using the wrong antenna type, or a wideband antenna that picks up both bands indiscriminately, can cause serious reception problems rather than solving them.
Band-specific antennas are essential, and this is where many Perth homes fall short. Since the digital TV switchover completed in 2013, a large number of new build homes and properties that have had antenna work done have ended up with cheap wideband antennas, fitted by builders and subcontract installers looking to minimise cost. The reflected signal arrives fractionally later than the direct signal and, when both are received by the same antenna, they interfere with each other. Symptoms include pixelation on specific channels, signal that’s strong on a meter but still produces a poor picture, and reception that changes with weather or time of day. Multipath is best managed with a directional, band-specific antenna precisely aimed at the intended transmitter, minimising pickup of reflected signals from other directions.
Amplification: when it helps and when it makes things far worse. A masthead amplifier fitted at the antenna on the roof can improve signal in genuine low-signal situations: long cable runs, multiple TV outlets, or properties at the fringe of a transmitter’s coverage area. But attach a booster to a wideband antenna in an overlap zone and you’ve created the worst possible combination: every signal on every frequency, wanted and unwanted, gets amplified equally. The interference that was already present becomes stronger, the tuner in your TV gets overwhelmed, and what was marginal reception becomes no reception. This means a Hills Tru-Spec UHF antenna is required. A VHF antenna installed here will produce a weak or non-existent signal regardless of its quality or how well it’s aimed.
This is one of the most frequent causes of persistent poor reception James encounters in this area, particularly in newly built homes where builders have sometimes mistakenly installed standard VHF antennas. Swan Valley
