Essential TV reception facts for inner Perth
What you need to know
For TV reception, the Inner Suburbs split into two very different worlds — the apartments, units and high-rise of the central city, South Perth and Burswood, and the established character suburbs like Mount Lawley, Inglewood, North Perth and Victoria Park. Each has its own signal and mounting challenges. Here’s what James sees on the ground every week.

About Perth’s inner suburbs
A quick overview of the area and why TV installation needs differ from suburb to suburb — and from houses to apartments.
Perth’s Inner Suburbs are the dense, established ring wrapped around the CBD and the Swan River — taking in the central city itself plus the character and riverside suburbs immediately around it. From the apartment towers of Perth CBD, Northbridge, East Perth and South Perth, through the Federation streets of Highgate, Mount Lawley, Inglewood and North Perth, out to riverside Maylands, Bayswater and Bassendean and the busy Victoria Park strip, this is one of Perth’s most varied residential areas — a genuine mix of high-rise units, character homes and post-war brick.
For TV installation purposes the area splits into two distinct worlds. The central apartment and unit zone — Perth CBD, Northbridge, East Perth, West Perth, South Perth, Burswood and Rivervale — is dominated by strata buildings, shared master-antenna (MATV) systems, limited or no roof access, and signal shadows cast by nearby towers. The established house suburbs — Highgate, North Perth, Mount Hawthorn, Mount Lawley, Coolbinia, Menora, Maylands, Inglewood, Bedford, Bayswater, Bassendean, Dianella, Morley, Victoria Park, Lathlain, Carlisle and Kensington — are mostly double brick with mature tree cover and ageing antennas, and in pockets like Mount Lawley and Highgate, heritage and character protections.
From a TV reception perspective, this split matters. The Carmel/Bickley transmitter serves the whole area, but the right approach for a CBD apartment fed off a building’s shared system is completely different from a tree-shaded Inglewood roof or a Victoria Park double-brick lounge. The right antenna, mast height, bracket grade, cable type and — for apartments — the strata pathway are all situation-specific decisions, not a one-size-fits-all install.
James has been installing TV antennas and mounting TVs across Perth since 1992 and works the Inner Suburbs regularly. He knows how to trace a fault back through an apartment’s MATV system, which masts clear the old trees in Mount Lawley and Inglewood, and how to mount TVs cleanly on every wall type found in the area — from the double-brick lounges of North Perth to the concrete and rendered walls common in CBD and South Perth apartments.
